Thomas Dugdale is about to take his sister Beryl and cousin Gladys Crake for a drive

The new motor car! 1915

After 1900 motor power began to take over from horse power and by 1915 there were about 180,000 cars on the road. This is a 16 horse power Darracq, made in 1914. The car was built in London but the company was French. It cost £375, and the annual road tax was 6 guineas. One pound then is the equivalent of £65 today. The 18 year old Thomas Dugdale is about to take his sister Beryl and cousin Gladys Crake for a drive in the new car which is parked outside his home, Crathorne Hall.
