Empire Day, 1916

Empire Day, 1916

During the difficult days of 1916, when casualties were mounting on the Western Front, Empire Day was celebrated in Crathorne with patriotic fervour. This photograph shows Lionel Dugdale standing, in characteristic pose , leaning on his stick. His wife, Violet, is beside him. On the right, is the end of the horse drawn float which, complete with a cornet player, a drummer and the rector's wife playing the piano, processed through the village to Crathorne Hall for 'a splendid tea provided by Mr and Mrs Dugdale'.
