The water mill was finally dismantled in 1970 as it was 'structurally unsound'. First reference to a corn mill in Crathorne appears early in the 13th Century. The mill continued to be productive over the centuries, with flour exported as far as London. It was ground by one of three pairs of stones which were powered by an 18 foot diameter overshot wheel, fed by the mill race pictured above which ran from the weir on the River Leven. When the estate was sold in 1844, the annual rental of Mill Farm was £500, far exeeding that of the other tenanted farms, an indication of the profitability of the corn-mill itself. The mill was in use, up to the time it was dismantled, to grind cattle feed and to power other agricultural machinery, rather than in flour production. During the war it powered a generator to supply Mill Farm with electricity, as the mains supply did not reach Crathorne until 1947
